Instagram introduces Reels Ads Placements through its Marketing API

In August 2020, Instagram introduced the format "Reels" - Instagram's rival to TikTok in terms of 15-60 second short-videos with clip adjustments, creative assets and music library. After some time of speculation, Instagram now announces that the format will be available as an ad placement through its Marketing API.

On October 12, Facebook announced that Instagram is bringing Reels Ads placements to its Marketing API, available on all current Marketing API versions – without an upgrade.

Thanks to the new addition, developers now have the opportunity to allow their clients to create and preview Reels Ads via the Instagram Marketing API. 

Key Details

This feature update will enable the following three capabilities / use cases via the Marketing API.

  • Ads creation: Developers will be able to use “INSTAGRAM_REELS” as one of the target positions when creating ads
  • Ads insights: When breaking down insights by Placement level, it will be possible to see how ads perform via Instagram Reels placement
  • Ad preview: Developers will be able to fetch the preview in the Instagram Reels format

The Facebook For Developers page has added complete step-by-step developer documentation to assist developers in getting started with Facebook’s Marketing API. The documentation also includes all technical details related to this update.
